Be a blacksmith for the day!
Spend a day
in a fully equipped working forge learning all the
basic blacksmithing techniques. After covering health and safety
procedures in the forge you will be shown the tools, equipment and how
to light and use the forge. You will cover basic metallurgy; iron,
steel and non-ferrous, work the metal at different temperatures and will learn how to judge the heat of the metal by its colour. Work on an anvil and swage block, learn pointing, curling
and forge welding.
This will be an extremely enjoyable but physical day working in the forge. Alex will set the 'project' for the day which will enable you to learn all the basic techniques and and the end of the day you will take home your forged metalwork.
There are only four places on each course,
allowing you to progress at your own pace. This popular course DCRS has been running for 10 years.
Alex Pole trained as a jewellery maker in 1990, and followed this with blacksmithing in 1994. He has worked professionally in both fields ever since. DCRS has been teaching blacksmithing since 2003, and Alex has been our Tutor since 2009, he is very popular and students often want to come back for a second day!
Alex's own forge in Over Stratton on the Dorset/Somerset border.

The workshop is much larger than the old teaching stidio at DCRS, with all the equipment one would expect with a fully working forge and is surrounded by beautiful apple orchards.
