There is free camping in the Orchard next to Alex's Somerset workshop.

Families are welcome to come with course participants. They won't be allowed in the workshop during working hours, but they can certainly join the group during lunch and evening meal times, and look around the workshop at the end of the day and see what progress has been made.

Axe Making Course UK with Sedish Master Fredrik Thelin

With Swedish Master Fredrik Thelin from Gransfors Bruks

This is the first time a Swedish Master has come to the UK to teach Axe Forging. Fredrik Thelin normally teaches at the internationally renowned Gransford Bruks, but in 2016, he is coming to Alex Pole's Forge in Somerset!

A good level of previous knowledge is recommended (equivalent to the beginners and follow-up course). On this course you will be learning how to make forging tools and steel-edged tools using traditional methods (forge, hammer and anvil).

You will learn how to forge a mandrel, a pair of tongs and a splitting chisel – these tools will then be used to forge a laminated axe. Further teaching and practice on materials, tempering and grinding will also be part of the course.

There are only six places available on this five-day course which includes al the l materials used. The steel that you will use to forge the axe will be imported from Sweden.

Lunch and evening meals are included in the cost, as is on-site camping if required.

Course cost

£780 for all five days including:

All materials (steels, axe handle, etc.)

All safety gear (gloves, goggles, ear protection) will be provided for the duration of the course.

All meals are included in the price, as well as teas, coffees, etc.

There is free camping in the orchard next to the workshop (with limited facilities) or a list of local B & B’s can be provided.

The course is led by Fredrik Thelin, a highly qualified and experienced blacksmith who runs courses at Gränsfors Bruks, Sweden. Fredrik has worked as a professional blacksmith for 20 years and has extensive experience (additional info can be found at www.gransforsbruk.com)

Fredrik will be assisted by Alex Pole, owner of Alex Pole Ironwork where the course will be run. Alex has been working as a blacksmith for over 20 years, as well as a silversmith and jewellery maker. He has been DCRS's Blacksmith Tutor since 2010 and he attended the 2014 axe making course at Gransfors where he invited Fredrik to visit and demonstrate his skills in the UK.
